Histologic Changes

For comparison, this section is from a 31-week gestation baby who had total anomalous pulmonary venous return. The vessels are congested but normally placed. No large veins are present in the bronchovascular bundle, and air space walls are thin. Capillaries filled with blood are present under invisible alveolar type I cells.

Note the development of alveoli, especially at the lower left. The peribronchiolar lymphatics are dilated because of the venous obstruction.
