Histology of Normal Testis

The photo shows normal seminiferous tubules, which contain maturing germ cells. The outer layers are composed of spermatogonia and primary and secondary spermatocytes. Sertoli cells are mixed with the germ cells. The small dark bodies toward the center are spermatids. A thin connective tissue sheath surrounds each tubule. The interstitium, which is widened by edema here, contains testosterone-producing Leydig cells.

The maturing germ cells and spermatids (left arrow) and Leydig cells (right arrow) are shown at higher magnification.
