Papillary Area
The tumor has a papillary pattern as it invades normal alveolar structures. In contrast to usual papillary tumors that have neoplastic cells covering a fibrovascular core, tumor here covers and fills the core.
Gross features: A wedge of lung with a smooth pleura contained a firm, white nodule, 1.8 x 1.6 x 1.2 cm. The nodule was 1.4 cm from the closest surgical margin and did not extend to the pleura.
Histologic features: This circumscribed, but not encapsulated, tumor has several patterns.
