Immunohistochemistry of IMT

Figure 1. An antibody to smooth muscle actin stains cells with actin filaments including both normal smooth muscle cells and myofibroblasts. Here the perivascular smooth muscle reacts strongly with the antibody and the neoplastic fibroblasts less so. Note that the foamy histiocytes show no staining.

Find two blood vessels.

Find a collection of foamy histiocytes.

Electron microscopy shows the actin filaments in detail.

Figures 2 & 3. The next two images show reactivity of the tumor with anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK).

Note the uniform staining of the tumor cells. Vessels are unstained.

At higher magnification, the stain is uniformly distributed in the cytoplasm. Nuclei are not stained. The foamy histiocytes are not stained.
