Histologic changes: In this nest the goblet cells (arrow) are mixed with the squamous cells. In other parts of the nest, squamous maturation proceeds from the outer basal cells inward. The reactive stroma is mostly loose, connective tissue with scattered inflammatory cells.

A PAS-digested stain (below) of another nest shows more vividly the mixture of mucin-producing, goblet cells (red) with the squamous cells (yellow).
