Necrotizing, cavitating pneumonia


Histologic changes: A section of the wall of the cavity in the RML shows a circumscribed zone of necrotic tissue around the cavity (toward the left, not shown) and a hemorrhagic margin in viable lung parenchyma. Aspergillus organisms abounded in the necrotic tissue, but there were no crystals. Note that there is only trivial inflammation and no fibrosis in the wall. The adjacent bleeding accounts for the CT "halo" sign of decreased attenuation around these lesions.
