Histologic changes: A low-power view of the lung shows patchy congestion of alveolar walls, especially in the upper right. Capillaries are distended by sickle RBCs. Edema fluid and an increased number of inflammatory cells are present in alveolar spaces. The 3 pink spots (*) are foci of old fibrosis. Airway (B) walls are only slightly inflamed.
